Competitive Analyses

See how others handle your challenges.

If you're like most of the product teams we work with, you spend a lot of time thinking about:

  • Your organization’s situation

  • Your organization’s challenges

  • Your organization’s limitations

With a competitive review, we can help broaden your gaze by exploring how other brands are tackling similar challenges.

The process starts by identifying relevant alternative experiences and the questions we need to answer. After analyzing the alternatives, we share observations related to the choices, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and trends of each. Insights from this activity can inform User Interviews, drive strategic focus, and inspire design possibilities.

Reveal insights from the wild.

Each competitive analysis is customized to your situation and needs. Some insights that an activity can expose include:

  • Features your competitors offer

  • How they position themselves, their products, features, or services

  • What use cases or audiences they seem to be investing in (or not)

  • What users may expect based on their experiences elsewhere

  • Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats from competitors

  • How features are implemented

  • Specific design choices other brands have made

Depending on the situation, it can be wise to include non-competitive brands in the analysis. For example, an insurance brand doesn’t compete with TurboTax, but Intuit’s easy-to-use forms offer valuable inspiration. These “best-in-breed" examples can spur new ideas.

Dial in the right depth for the audience.

Depending on the teams you have on your side, our competitive research can culminate in different levels of depth. From most to least granular:

  1. An at-a-glance view of what competitors are doing in a particular arena, lined up for easy comparison. This is the level of detail the project core team is often interested in.

  2. An easy-to-scan comparison chart detailing where exactly competitors fall on key decisions. This is the level of detail a project sponsor is likely interested in.

  3. Recommendations on what to do as a result. This is the level of detail a CEO or VP is often interested in.

“They do an outstanding job of listening to what we want, comparing that against the competition, and then providing best practice solutions. They’re not afraid to challenge our requests. They have top-shelf people. I always feel like I’m their only customer.”
— VP E-commerce Sales | MRO Manufacturer
